Dear M.,
We both wanted to call this book Little Western Engines; but Publishers are stern men. They did not approve.

They, of course, don't know the trouble we've had with Oliver. We hope he has learnt sense, but goodness knows what will happen when he finds he has a book all to himself....

I know! If Oliver gets uppish, we'll set Messrs. Kaye & Ward on to him. That'll teach him!
W.

Another good book. My only gripe was the story of Oliver down the turntable well. Built in the 1920s he would have known and shunted many trucks during his working life. To come to a railway and have to learn about trucks never seemed right to me. Although Sodor trucks do seem to have a bit of an attitude problem! To write about how conceited he could be was excellent but perhaps that arrogance made him take more trucks than he should of? That would make more sense. A little 0-4-2T wouldn't have a large braking force to stop a heavy mineral train and a runaway would and could happen.
